I made this compass to replace the one that comes with Windswept by dutchmogul. It is used as a counter to only allow the game to have 12 rounds. I wanted to add a little something of my own to the game.

I created this compass to have a similar style to vintage nautical compasses used on tall ships. A marker indicates the starting/end position. Note: You will need to color the needle to determine which way points North, or copy and modify the original compass model on TinkerCad.

I used tapered surfaces so using a dry-brush technique would highlight the horizontal lines stepping along the z axis of the print (a side effect from additive 3D printers) in an aesthetically pleasing way rather than showing flat surface with lines that could essentially go in any direction based on the settings of the slicer software.

1. Paint (I used Artist's Loft Acrylic Paint)
2. Yellow Ochre Deep
3. Gold Metallic
4. Silver Metallic
5. Ivory lack
6. Deep Red
7. Brushes
8. Sponge Brush
9. Paint brush
10. Sealer (I used Modpodge Hard Coat)

Paint

Dial

1. Give base coat of Yellow Ochre Deep
2. Drybrush with Gold
3. Paint individual shafts Ivory Black carefully
4. Paint top of "North" block Deep Red

Needle

1. Give base coat of Ivory Black
2. Paint one arrow Silver
3. Paint a letter "N" in Ivory Black
4. I used a toothpick to make it with lots of dotting

Seal

Seal the pieces so that the paint will not rub off when they are handled. In general, use a sponge brush to put a light layer of sealer over each piece. Use a paint brush to get into hard to reach areas. Make sure the clean the brushes before the sealer dries them together.

Needle

Find something round to stick through the needles hole, that gradually gets bigger, that can not go through the hole completely. Work the round stick to prevent the hole from getting smaller with the sealer, but make sure it will not end up glued to the needle.

Dial

Try to go very lightly on the center peg and platform that the needle will touch when the two pieces are assembled. Do not glob the sealer in this area.

##Assemble
Assemble the needle onto the compass. You may find that the sealer made the hole too small. You may need to look into other options to make the hole bigger in the needle, or to sand some of the glue off around the dials peg.
