Modelo 3D ChargedNeuron's Cryptex por ChargedNeuron no Thingiverse

Descrição

As a novice 3D printer hobbiest I wanted to print a Cryptex as found in the Thingiverse; but I simply didn't have the skills to print a quality cryptex that I could get to work. So I designed my own and designed it to be as easy and workable as possible. I am quite proud of this design and wanted to share it with all of you to say 'thank you' for all the other wonderful things others have designed and shared!

Happy Printing All!

This Cryptex has the ability to have the password changed once unlocked.

This was printed on a MakerBot 5th Generation using the Standard Medium Settings.

#ChargedNeuron's Cryptex

##Description
This is revision 1.2 is known as the SE model; this version supersedes all previous versions. These instructions are also available as a PDF with photos in the files section.

A Cryptex, as inspired from the Ron Howard movie “The Divinci Code”, is a puzzle box that contains a hidden item such as a message. A password is needed to unlock the puzzle.

##Parts List
The SE model has the ease of assembly of the previous Sx model but also addresses an issue that was resolved in the Hx model.

###Cryptex SE Model parts list:

  • Cryptex Body SE quantity 1
  • Cryptex Message Housing quantity 1
  • Cryptex End Cap quantity 2
  • Cryptex Ring Label quantity 5
  • Cryptex Ring Lock Sx quantity 4
  • Cryptex Ring Lock Hx quantity 1

##Printing Instructions;

All the parts are designed to print with the flat side down. The 'Cryptex Ring Lock' part should be printed thick side down and thin side up. I use the MakerBot Replicator Default Medium Print settings of 215C, PLA, 0.2mm, Rafts, No Supports, (your settings may vary).

##Assembly Instructions;

Read all the instructions before assembling.
###Cryptex SE Model:

  1. Take the 'Cryptex Body' and one 'Cryptex End Cap', locate the keyway in the body and the arrow on the End Cap. Glue the two pieces together with the Arrow aligned with the keyway.

  2. Take the 'Cryptex Message Housing' and the other 'Cryptex End Cap', locate the keys on the Message Housing and the Arrow on the End Cap. Glue the two pieces together with the Arrow aligned with the keyway.

TIP: Sliding the Message Housing and the Body together before gluing the end caps on will make it easier to align all four parts when gluing.

Put the glue away, I hate gluing parts if it can be avoided!

TIP: Apply a thin layer of lubricant on the 'Cryptex Body' in the notches the Tumblers would seat. I used petroleum jelly on mine. This will make the Tumblers make a nice 'Clicking' sound and feel.

  1. Assemble a single tumbler; take a 'Cryptex Ring Label' in your left hand with the letters the right side up, and a 'Cryptex Ring Lock' in your right hand and align the desired letter with the keyhole in the Ring Lock. Slide them together.

You will need to sand both flat surfaces down. The back side of the Locking Ring only needs to be sanded down to make it smooth so it moves smoothly against the next Tumbler. If you look closely at the top sides of the assembled Tumbler you will see a smaller ring on both the Ring Label and the Ring Lock.

With the the two pieces assembled, sand down the top sides together until the outside and inside ring are smooth together (making them planar). The Tumblers should measure 19.8 mm to 20mm, (do not exceed 20mm) from planar face to planar face. This is important to make sure that the Catches and the Keyways line up and that the total stack of Tumblers line up with the end of the Body.

  1. With the Tumbler assembly still in your right hand, pick up the 'Cryptex Body' in your left hand. Slide the Tumbler onto the 'Cryptex Body'. Once seated, rotate the Tumbler to align with the keyway. Repeat this for Tumblers Two through Four.

For Tumbler Five use the Ring Locking Hx part with the remaining label.

Don't forget your password.

  1. Slide The 'Message Housing' into the 'Body" by aligning the keys with the keyway. Work each Tumbler by rotating them clockwise and counter-clockwise as they seat in. Work the Message Body into the Message Housing by sliding them in and out.
    Finished! Enjoy!

##Change the Password;
Unlock the Cryptex and disassemble it. Reassemble it with the new password. Don't forget your password.
