🌦️ Automatic Modular Weather Station (Raspberry Pi Pico)
Welcome to the Industrial Modular Weather Station, a robust, reliable, and open-source environmental monitoring system designed for the Thingiverse Pico Design Contest.
While traditional consumer weather stations often suffer from fragile plastics and poor data transmission, this project bridges the gap between DIY making and industrial reliability. Powered by the flexible and versatile Raspberry Pi Pico, it is designed to be fully modular, weather-resistant, and easily deployable in harsh outdoor conditions.
🛠️ Monitored Parameters & Sensor Suite
The station is divided into operational modules, featuring highly accurate sensors to capture the environment's every move:
💨 Wind & Air Analytics
- Wind Speed Sensor (Anemometer) ✅ : A rugged, low-friction anemometer powered by a **Hall effect sensor SS41F **, designed to accurately capture everything from a gentle breeze to storm-force winds via pulse counting.
- Wind Direction Sensor (Weather Vane) ✅ : A weather vane equipped with a high-precision magnetic angular encoder AS5600 (magnetic compass sensor), providing absolute 360° wind orientation with zero physical blind spots and high wear resistance.
- Atmospheric Pressure, Temperature & Humidity (BME680) ✅ : Integrated using the industrial-grade BME680 sensor, tracking barometric pressure, ambient temperature, and relative humidity. The sensor is safely housed inside a custom 3D-printed radiation shield (Stevenson screen) to prevent solar radiation bias and condensation issues.

☀️ Light Monitoring
- Luminosity Sensor (TSL25911) ✅ : Equipped with a high-sensitivity light sensor, featuring a wide dynamic range (dual-diode for infrared and full-spectrum light) to accurately monitor cloud cover, solar irradiance, and daylight duration.

🌧️ Future Upgrades / Expansions
- Rain Gauge ❌ : The physical architecture and the Pico firmware are fully prepared to integrate a tipping-bucket rain gauge via a dedicated hardware interrupt pin.
🛰️ Core Electronics & Long-Range Telemetry
At the heart of the station lies a custom-designed enclosure shielding the brain and communication hardware:
- The Brain: The Raspberry Pi Pico. Chosen for its dual-core processing, low power consumption, and excellent PIO (Programmable I/O) state machines that flawlessly handle the high-frequency Hall effect pulses and encoder readouts without overloading the main CPU.
- Acquisition & Radio Protocol Box ❌ : (Work in Progress / Conceptualized) A weatherproof central hub designed to gather all sensor data, filter noise, and pack it into a robust Long-Range Radio Protocol (like LoRa or RF) to transmit telemetry to a remote base station miles away without relying on local Wi-Fi.
📐 3D Printing & Industrial Design Features
- Modular Assembly: Every sensor bracket and mechanical arm can be replaced, repaired, or upgraded independently.
- Weatherproofing: The main box and sensor housings feature integrated O-ring grooves and drip-edges to keep electronics bone-dry.
- UV Resistant: Designed to be printed in ASA or PETG for maximum UV, weather, and heat endurance under direct sunlight.
