This Linux penguin keychain is a solid, layered reinterpretation of the classic Tux artwork originally created by lewing@isc.tamu.edu using The GIMP. The iconic source image is respected in its proportions and expression, but translated into physical form through careful 3D modeling rather than being flattened or stylized into a generic logo.

The model was built in AutoDesk Inventor by selectively extruding individual regions of the original artwork to different heights. The belly, eyes, beak, wings, and feet are all raised relative to the base silhouette, creating a clean, stepped relief that preserves the visual structure of the original drawing while making it readable and tactile as a physical object. This layered approach avoids tiny engraved lines that would disappear in printing or casting and instead produces strong, durable features you can feel with your fingers.

At roughly 2 by 2 inches in its outer bounds, the piece is sized to be clearly visible without being bulky on a keyring or zipper pull. It has enough surface area for the raised details to read cleanly, while still fitting comfortably in a pocket.

The result is a one-piece, thick-bodied keychain that has real depth and weight. It is not a flat cutout. The raised facial and body features give it a coin-like, embossed look that holds up to daily handling and wear. The integrated keyring loop is part of the solid body, not an add-on, so it will not snap off under load.

Because the geometry is built from smooth, closed shapes and stepped height changes, the design prints cleanly on FDM and resin printers. It can be produced in plastic or resin without losing the clarity of the original Tux design.

This is a faithful, physical tribute to one of the most recognizable pieces of free software art ever made, transformed into a durable, everyday carry Linux keychain.
