Roly Poly Population Control Trap
I created this trap to curb a massive overpopulation of pill bugs in my garden beds. To be clear, the trap doesn't hurt them in anyway and I relocate them to the area of my compost pile. I'm not trying to eliminate them just curb the population down to normal levels so they will stop chomping on my plants
The idea was to create something that pill bugs would be attracted to as a safe hiding spot, in addition to being a trap they couldn’t escape. This way, the trap isn’t necessarily dependent on bait. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, whether I use bait or not, the number of pill bugs caught each day stays about the same. Placement seems to be the most important factor in catching large of these little guys. I’ve had the best results placing traps along garden bed edges and corners—anywhere cool, dark, and damp. Alternatively, just put them where you already see lots of pill bugs congregating. The top is designed to sit as low to the ground as possible, creating a dark and inviting space for them to hide.
The trap consists of four parts: the housing, the trap body, the trap lid, and an optional housing cap. The housing is meant to be buried flush with the soil surface, with a small hole in the bottom to prevent water from pooling. The trap body can slide in and out as needed, without having to dig each time. The trap body also includes a drainage hole to prevent water accumulation. The optional cap can be used to cover the housing when the trap is not in place, keeping dirt and debris out.
