RAK Rooftop Solar Node Enclosure This is a fully DIY, watertight 3D-printed enclosure designed to house a RAKwireless WisBlock and support solar-powered operation with an 8000mAh battery. Perfect for rooftop deployments or remote IoT applications!
Features: Holds three 60x120mm solar panels (wired in parallel with a 5V inline regulator). Internal compartment for a RAKwireless WisBlock module. Bottom tray designed for an 8000mAh battery. Uses M3 brass threaded inserts (6mm depth) for secure assembly. Outer plates screw in place for a weather-resistant seal. Silicone Rubber Sheet added to both plates to create a waterproof gasket.
Parts Needed: RAKwireless WisBlock – https://a.co/d/epvHetw 60x120mm Solar Panels (x3) – https://a.co/d/fwloHkG For solar panel protection, it's recommended to use a 1N5819 Schottky diode on the positive lead of each panel to prevent backflow current in parallel setups. 5V Inline Regulator – https://a.co/d/5lt55lj JST Connectors – https://a.co/d/blzwB1k 8000mAh Battery – https://a.co/d/0EuRP6K M3 Brass Inserts (6mm depth) – https://a.co/d/aZaZuHz M3 Screws – https://a.co/d/1cJEXNx Silicone Rubber Sheet (for gasket sealing) – https://a.co/d/gjJfogO any loRa antenna will do. Assembly Instructions: Print all 4 parts of the enclosure. Melt in M3 brass inserts (6mm depth) into the designated mounting holes. Solder JST male connectors to each of the three solar panels. Create a 3-to-1 JST connector, combining all three solar panels into a single JST plug. Solder the JST plug to the bottom of the RAK solar input pins (I use the red JST plug instead of the one on the board). Add a 5V regulator, either inline or removable for maintenance. Cut and apply a silicone gasket under each solar panel, then slide them into place for a watertight seal. Place the RAK module inside the inner housing and plug in all connections. Place the battery in the bottom tray and secure wiring connections. Secure the outer plates using M3 screws, ensuring the silicone gasket provides a tight seal. Test the system to ensure power is flowing correctly and the enclosure remains watertight. Super proud of this build—hope it helps others working on off-grid, solar-powered IoT solutions! 🌞🔋
