Summary Updated and simplifies Yarn/Wool Winder - 3D Printed - Power Tool Driven I decided to make a minimalist design that took into account any problems with the original and the feedback received. I also designed an improved wool/yarn tensioner.
I provided STLs for a horizontal version and 45 degree version.
There is a version without a counterbalance spindle and also a counterbalance spindle as it runs a little smoother. The counterbalance is made from lead weights used in toy cars. I found these at the local hobby store. Hobby Lobby for the people in the USA. Each 4 gram weight is about 14mm by 19mm. I used 6 for a total of 24 grams. The same type of weight is also available on Amazon in the USA made by Woodland Scenic and called Pine Car Derby Adjustable Stick on Weights.
I updated the tensioner/guide. This one has two clips that are put on after the wool is threaded to make sure it doesn't come loose. If you use very thick wool these may need to be modified. The tensioner does not work for the 45 degree body as it is too low. I added a tensioner stand to bring it to the correct level. There are 4 alignment pins in the tensioner stand and they should be glued together. Crazy/Super glue (Cyanoacrylate) works well.
Update 25 July 2025
The Spindle with CB was updated from WW Spindle CB 2 v34 to WW Spindle CB 3 v5. "opedrinho" identified in the comments that the old one had hollow sections inside. The updated one does not have hollow cavities so should be stronger. I also broke a few spindles so they are not as reliable as I would like them to be. Be careful of breaking them. I would keep a spare in case it breaks during a winding and would recommend going to PETG as it is stronger.
