Inspired by the many air filtration systems, I wanted to design my own that incorporated easy-to-find respirator cartridges, an 80mm fan, and my Ikea Lack enclosure.
I used these respirator cartridges, but any P-A-1 cartridge should work. The important part to me was that they were rated for vapors, not just particles.
The fan is a regular 80mm fan (25mm thick). I chose this one, and it is VERY quiet.
Assembly was done by finding a suitable location on the table top, then tracing the MIDDLE piece, which is designed to fit inside the hole cut in the table. (The top and bottom are wider, so they sandwich the table in between.)
Then, you assemble the bottom, filter (thread side up), middle, and fan (exhaust towards top), and insert the assembly from the bottom. There's enough vertical play so that you can ensure everything fits nicely. I had mine done so that the fan barely protruded from the top of the table, that way when I put the top on and tightened it up, it drew everything together nicely. I used #8 all-thread because I couldn't find 2 3/4" screws. I think M6 is the metric equivalent.
Tolerances are REALLY tight, and there isn't really a need to have any seals.
With that fan, the thing is so quiet I just hooked it up to the same 12v PSU that powers the LED strip lights. It just runs at full speed when it's on.
