The Lava Worm prefers warm regions deep underground where it tunnels about searching for heavy metals (gold and lead are its favourites) to digest. Fortunately it is neither intelligent nor aggressive, although its inability to distinguish between natural veins of gold ore and gold coins carried by adventurers has caused the occasional issue. Its thick hide make it difficult to injure, and it can spit hot acid capable of softening solid metal or rock.

It gets its name from the white hot furnace which makes up the core of its digestive system, as well as its immunity to heat. They are especially feared and hated by red dragons as they are not only immune to the fire, but can eat their way through a dragon hoard from underneath.

Despite being extremely solitary and rare they sometimes leaves clutches of colourful eggs in pockets of fresh lava. Not only are the crystalline eggs exceptionally beautiful, they are also quite magical and the lucky miners who stumble across a clutch of them can expect an early retirement with the proceeds of their sale.
