Our lovely old Greek neighbour Phil died. In the Greek orthodox tradition, on the 40th day after death, a boiled wheat dish called koliva is eaten as a memorial, representing new life.
We decided to make a stencil of his initials from an old letter of his father's. I used paint.net to isolate the letters from a scan of the letter, add some blur to restore the shape of the letters, and then I used selva 3d to convert the simplified picture into an stl file.
Selva 3d is my absolute favourite program to convert text or clip art into a printable stl file. you can find the app at http://app.selva3d.com.
So, Now I had Phil's initials in his father's handwriting, in a printable form.
I used tinkercad to add a stick to the letters so we could hold the stencil from a safe distance from the food.
Once that was printed, my girlfriend pointed out that the stencil would make a good spoon.
So I used tinkercad to add a bowl using the egg shaped object, and bumped everything around so that it was usable after a couple of iterations.
It is not a strong spoon, it is a disposable spoon meant for one use of eating koliva, and possibly kept as a memorial for phil.
If anyone wants to print a memorial spoon for the 40 days, Phil's 40th day is Wednesday the 26th of September 2018.
The spoon is here so that his family in Greece can print a copy if they like, and to remain as a memorial to phil.
The P for Phil, is actual a stylised Phi, which is more noticeable in the original letter, but not until you look closely. The A is technically a capital alpha, but that isn't really interesting since capital alpha and capital a seem the same.
