This model was inspired by a print I made of the awesome Pangolin by amaochan. I was impressed by my printer's ability to deal with the very tight tolerances involved in that model.
I began with a two-cube prototype with an in-print hinge assembly. That's when I discovered the very similar design by austinvojta. Going by his narrative, he approached the design in exactly the same way as I did - make the radii of the cube edges match the swing of the hinge. This not only makes an awesome mechanism, is has a pleasant aesthetic in the hand.
The two-cube version is ideal if you want to test the hinge mechanism without wasting a huge amount of time - it only takes an hour to print. You can download the prototype here.
Onto specifics: the cubes are 0.3mm apart, the hinges are also 0.3mm from the cubes and 'float' in the spaces allocated to them. This model should be printed without support, but note that some fusing will occur. See Post-Printing on how to free up the cube.
