The hex rings are directional, put the joining piece in the larger end of the hole and it will go almost all the way in. Then hit it with a hammer to secure it. Removable, but not easily.

The size is perfect for the bottles pictured, which is the exact bottle I measured for it. Should fit many other bottles, or scale it up for larger. It might fit beer and smaller wine bottles.
