Bumper Bot Scyphozoa Domelia
Hello,my name is Jason Bakutis. I designed and built Bumper Bot to be a part of Makerbot's Robot Petting Zoo for the 2012 Maker Faire season.
Some of you may have already seen Bumper Bot in action. If so, then you also saw how much the children (of all ages) enjoyed his company.
Bumper Bot is a friendly species of robot. He patiently finds his way around, whistling as he goes. If something blocks his path, he finds another way around. He can also be programmed to perform a variety of tasks.
Oh yeah, he also has googly eyes, jets, and arcade buttons.
I designed Bumper Bot to be built by others, with intuitive, easy to follow, steps. He is engineered in a way that encourages modification, so it is really easy to give your Bot personality.

Bumper Bot is a simple project, with no need for an advanced understanding of electronics. However, there are areas that can be elaborated upon (i.e; the Arcade buttons), if you so choose.
The "engine" for the Bumper Bot is a Scribbler S2 robot by Parallax, which is able to be programmed by a 5th grader. Again, one has the freedom to "go deeper" using the free, open source S2 GUI.
The parts, all together, take somewhere between 50 and 60 hours to print (he's a biggie), but this is calculated with extra shells, so that can be shortened considerably. Not a single Bumper Bot suffered any damage after being handled by literally thousands of children, mostly in the 2-5 age group (!)
The actual assembly only takes, at most, 2 hours, and is a pleasurable experience (I should know, I built 5 of them).
