Space Race Chess Set

The Cold War saw the United States and Soviet Union in a contest for dominion not only of the Earth, but of the heavens. Superiority in rocketry and space exploration became metrics for the success of their rival political and economic ideologies. The spacecraft and launch vehicles developed by the competing space programs differed wildly in their design philosophy but were remarkably alike in functionality--reflecting the distinct routes followed by the two superpowers in pursuit of the same goals.
