This nice little object is a soap-film (or minimal surface) connecting two knots. The trefoil knot, in the center, is one of the knots we use everyday to lace our shoes, a very simple knot (with genus one). The second one, forming the outer ring, is barely a knot. It's the infamous unknot, the most simplest knot of all, the only one having genus zero: the circle.

As a minimal surface with a boundary defined by knots, the resulting Trefunknot is a Seifert surface (named after German topologist Herbert Seifert, 1907-1996). This surface is ideal for a pendant or earrings (see my designs on Shapeways).

Under Thingiview, try to rotate the object along its vertical axis and you will see it smiling and frowning, depending on the angle.
