Mount a baby gate using hardware in tricky locations:

• Attached to metal balusters
• Using zip ties instead of screws
• With the gate at an angle

The baluster at the top of our stairs is metal, and a clerestory window obstructs where one of the brackets should mount. This model helps mount the gate at a slight angle (~10 degrees) to clear the window, attach to the metal railing using beefy zip ties, and ensure smooth operation.

Assembly (this order prevents strain when applying zip ties): 

1. Use giant zip ties to attach the brackets at the appropriate height to your baluster
2. Use liberal amounts of CA glue to attach the brackets that came with your gate to the brackets
3. Close the gate and let CA glue dry completely

Tip: you can extend the gate to act as a clamp while the CA glue dries; however, don't apply so much force that the bracket distorts.

To customize the angle, load into FreeCAD, open the spreadsheet (visible in Combo View), and edit the “Angle” to suit your need.
