You need:

• ESP8266/32
• addressable LEDs
• USB-C port/panel breakout 
• button (optional)

I used 33 WS281x (144 LEDs/m) ~23cm I had lying around, but you can also use less dense strips (maybe with multiple turns).

Print Settings:

I used a 0.6mm nozzle (so I got 2 perimeters) with 0.28mm layers (~60g filament).
Obviously the smaller the layer height, the better the result!
Use white or a bright opaque filament.
If the cardboard part of your spool isn't 60mm high, just scale the z-dimension in the slicer.

Preparation:

You can prepare an ESP flashed with WLED (in my case a D1 mini with LED Data on D4 and the button on D3).

Assembly:

Take apart one of the plastic sides of the spool just by pulling. Put the _lid over the cardboard part (bottom side outwards). Drill a hole in the cardboard to get the LED strip from the inside out. My strip has 2 additional wires for power - they'll be outside the cardboard and get soldered to a USB-C panel breakout linked below. The optional button will be inside (I fixed mine with some hotglue in place) If your button's stem is too short, you can use a drop of super glue and stick the _button_cover on top. Mount the LEDs to the cardboard and put on the _main part by guiding the USB-C panel from the inside out and mounting it in its recess. The 2nd plastic side is ideally put in place so that the ‘filled hexagons’ cover the USB Port.
