The job accomplished by moononournation is absolutely amazing (check out his instructable to understand how complex it was to create this moon) but it's your responsibility to build something cool with it and that's where I come in :-)
Hereby I present you my mod to make an Ikea Rodd lamp shade from his moon.
Instructions: Print parameters:
100 microns layer height, 100% (yes, 100%) infill, non-tree supports touching the build plate. Of course, it's very much advised to print it in one solid piece for the best result.
Depending on your printing speed and your nozzle, this may need up to a week to finish. I personally did it intwo days with a 0.8 mm nozzle. I also used about 250g of PETG, so that's significant.
You can either print my version or build your own (mostly because you want a smaller or bigger lamp shade but also if you want to apply the same principle [the Ikea threads] to a different design). If you want to scale it, remember we're working with a 3D volume, so if you scale it up by 50%, it will take over three times longer to print. Personally, I think this 170 mm appears already pretty huge. Likewise, if you reduce its size slightly, you'll save a lot of time and material. Just remember to scalebefore you cut the hole and add the threads ;-)
My version:
PrintNickduino's Moonshade.stl withSupport blocker.stl to block supports going too high on the outside of the moon (they ruin the finish and are a nightmare to remove).
Your version:
- Do what you like withA- 5 inches Moon mesh by moononournation.stl (or any other file)
- Do aboolean difference with Part A &B- Hole.stl in Meshmixer (or any software). Depending on the design, you may want to remesh the cylinder but you probably shouldn't touch the moon
- Do either a combine or aboolean union between the result of the former step and theC- Screw.stl (long or short, your choice)
eeePrintNickduino's Moonshade.stl with non-tree supports touching the build plate and useSupport blocker.stl to block supports going to high on the outside of the moon (they ruin
In summary, your final stl should be equal to files: A - B + C
