This system is somewhat similar to gridfinity, but made to work with arbitrary cell sizes. I use it with wide IKEA Alex drawers where I use a combination of 50mm and 37.5mm cell sizes such that 150x150mm grid segments can be combined in various ways.

The provided stls are made for these dimensions but if you require different ones, you can easily generate them in the OpenSCAD customizer.

There are a few basic components that make up the system:

  • The grid goes in the bottom of the drawer (if the drawer doesn't pull all the way out and hence you can't use the back part of it, you can use a few thin strips of double-sided tape to affix it to the drawer) and ensures that the boxes stay in place
  • The standard boxes which can be generated in any combination of unit cells for both width and height
  • A special single cell outer box which fits 8 very small inner boxes stacked as 2x2x2 if you need to store really tiny components and want to keep the footprint to a minimum

The standard boxes can be generated with a label holder in which a small label can be inserted.

The following parameters can be customized using the OpenSCAD customizer:
  • cell width, i.e. the base size of which any box will be a multiple
  • box height
  • The fillet radius of the outer edges of the boxes
  • The wall thickness of the boxes (should ideally be a multiple of your line width, I use 1.2mm with a 0.6mm line width)
  • grid depth, i.e. how “high” the grid onto which the boxes are slotted protrudes.
  • The number of rows and columns of cells that a box or a grid occupies. For the grid, you can just generate as many cells as your printer will fit and then place multiple parts next to each other
  • Specifics of the label holder, i.e. whether to add it to a box, how tall the label slot is, and the angle of the lower edge (as steeper angles are easier to print)
  • The tolerance between the boxes so the fit isn't too tight

Printing Instructions

  • When printing boxes with labels, align them on the build plate such that the air from the part cooling fan will blow perpendicularly onto the label holder
  • If you experience issues with corners of the boxes curling up, adding the tiniest bit of supports just under the 4 corners as well as intersections of the gridlines can help
