Designed for printers that need to often switch from open-air to enclosed setups, these hinges take the original Voron Trident door hinges geometry and adapt it to allow magnets to be used as contact points. Quickly install or detach them in seconds, they use parts that you probably already have lying around and don't require any tools!

BOM

• 18 6x3mm round magnets, 3 for each hinge

or

• 6 6x3mm round magnets, 1 for each hinge
• 6 6x6 round magnets, 1 for each hinge

the second option should be better suited for this application, but I haven't had issues with using 3 magnets for each hinge part myself

• VHB tape
• Superglue

Optionally, 1mm foam tape to go around the perimeter of the doors and ensure some insulation. I personally also added a strip of foam tape to the mating side of the doors (on one side only)

Assembly

Each hinge assembly is composed of a frame piece which holds two magnets glued back to back, and a panel piece which holds one magnet and has a hole that allows the frame piece to slide in and out of.

As always when working with magnets check polarities!

The process is pretty straightforward, don't be scared by the wall of text :)

1. print all 6 hinge elements
2. using a 6mm drill bit, clean the magnet hole on the frame pieces and panel pieces (if needed)
3. using a 6.5mm drill bit, clean the magnet hole on the panel pieces (only the part in which the frame magnet will slide in and out from)
4. based on which magnet setup you use:
   • if using 6x6mm magnets, glue one of them on the frame piece (half of it will stand out), and glue one 6x3mm magnet inside the panel piece
   • if using 6x3mm magnets, scuff the mating surfaces to help creating a strong bond, glue two of them back to back, and glue the resulting pillar on the frame piece. Then glue a 6x3mm magnet on the panel piece
5. test the hinges and make sure the magnets can be inserted/removed easily for every hinge, and that they rotate smoothly (only the magnets touch, plastic parts are barely in contact)
6. add VHB tape on each panel piece, but don't remove the backing
7. remove the original hinges if present, ensure that the doors already have the handles attached and that the center latches are already properly mounted
8. mount one door panel and align it with the latch to have it stay in place by the magnets
9. mount the three hinge pieces and position them where you like most
10. remove the VHB tape backing and close the hinges on the door panel, pressing them firmly
11. slightly open the door panel and pull it up to remove it (together with the panel hinges), then let it rest somewhere to let the tape fully adhere
12. reinstall the doors and you are done!

If you find that your 6x3 magnets don't stay attached to each-other try to sand the mating surfaces a bit, to help the glue get a better grip on them
