3D model gap test by Chris Barton on Printables

Description

The model has gap sizes of 1mm, 500 microns, 400 microns, 300 microns, 200 microns, 100 microns, and 50 microns.  These gaps are for both (a) straight line sections and (b) single point gaps where the gap between two circluar features is varied.

I printed these with Prusament PLA Galaxy Silver on my MK3S+.

When printed with different perimeters/infill percent/layer height the results were consistent, with merging across the gap for the 50 micron straight wall section, but for none of the other gaps.

The annotated microscope images are with a 100 micron (0.1 mm) layer height.  The images show that the printer does an amazing job of putting plastic where it needs to be under allmost all of the conditions… however noticable print quality artefacts are:

  1. There is merging between different sides of gap for 50 micron at both top and bottom of the print (100 layers high).
  2. The elephant foot compensation is good, but consitently oversizes the gap for the first layer and slightly undersizes the gap for layers 3 to 6.
  3. The perimeter edges at the gaps look to warp upwards by around 50 micron… can this be compensated for in the slicer settings?

Cheers

Chris
