3D Printy Mini Ghost vase mode hack (with author's permission).
How Does it Work?
Vase mode is a built-in slicer feature allowing for seamless printing in a single continuous spiral, best suited for hollow objects with a flat bottom and open top, like a cup or a vase (hence the name). This remix literally turns that concept on its head, printing a model with open bottom and closed top. Slight alterations were necessary to the model geometry to make it work (still not 100% proof, see below), so this file is NOT interchangeable with the original sculpt.
Print instructions:
- select vase mode (disables perimeters, infill and top layers)
- select 0 bottom layers
- enable brim (there are no bottom layers so this is necessary, 5mm works fine)
- recommend slicing via variable layer height (0.15 should work fine but will be unnecessarily time consuming whereas my prints take under 40min).
Disclaimer:
I said this is a vase mode “hack” for a reason: we're doing something a printer/slicer isn't really designed to do, so this is basically a disclaimer that success is not guaranteed: there are some steep overhangs that may fail at the top. That said, I can consistently make it work on a 0.6 nozzle with 1mm extrusion width. I haven't tested it to run on 0.4 nozzle; if I did, I'd probably go with 0.7-0.8mm extrusion width to be on the safe side.
