PROBLEMS
- Limited AMS spool designs to choose from
- Most available spool models are fixed and cannot be customized for either faster printing (less spokes) or heavier spool (more spokes)
- Available models lack the ability to add labels and texts upon printing of the spool
- Filament is extremely bent when attaching to the filament end holes causing filament to break when you straighten it back when it's time to use it.
SOLUTION
An OpenSCAD program that allows the user to:
- Choose from a variety of designs. The program has 10 built-in designs.
- Be able to customize the amount of spokes on the spool
- Add text to be engraved onto the spool
- Store filament ends without extremely bending hence preventing filaments from breaking when it's time to use it.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Download the .zip file.
- Unzip the contents into a folder in your hard drive.
- Download OpenSCAD at www.openscad.org/downloads
- Open the .scad file.
- Customize the spool by changing the parameters (see parameters below). Press F5 to preview the design.
- Once satisfied with the design, render the design for exporting.
- Select File > Export > Export to STL/3MF to export the final design to STL or 3MF.
- Slice, print, profit!
PARAMETERS
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Style Number | Values are nos. 1-10 corresponding to the 10 built-in designs |
| Amount of Spokes | No. of spokes the spool will have. Less spokes mean faster printing and less filament; more spokes mean longer printing but heavier spool Note: Some designs have fixed no. of spokes and cannot be changed. |
| Spool Part to Generate | Choose which half of the spool to generate, i.e., narrow part or wide part |
| Label Text | Optional. Used to let you know the filament brand the spool contains. Label tag is only produced on the narrow spool part. |
| Note to Self Text | Optional. Text or message that will be engraved around the hub of the spool as reminder to yourself about the specifics of the spool, e.g., spool is printed in PLA and cannot be used in dryer box, or spool is printed in ASA/ABS and is dryer box compatible. |
| Text Size | Size of text. Ensure text size is not too big to cause the text to overlap. |
