Bringing security with 3D‑Printed Key Tags and a Key Box

A guide how to use 3D‑printed key tags, a key box (better locked than unlocked), and a secure digital key list to improve safety and organization at home.

Advantages

  • More order & better organization

  • Higher security

  • Missing keys become immediately visible

  • It only costs you some filament and an afternoon

1. Choosing a safe mounting location for the Key Box

A key box only improves security if it’s mounted in a safe, discreet, and stable location.

  • Location — Install the key box indoors, ideally in a low‑visibility area such as a utility room, hallway closet, or behind a door. The goal is to keep it accessible to household members but not obvious to visitors.

  • Avoid exposed areas — Never mount the key box near the entrance, next to windows, or in any place visible from outside. Avoid garages with open visibility or shared spaces in apartment buildings.

  • Installation — Use proper wall anchors and screws to ensure the box cannot be easily removed or tampered with.

2. Using 3D‑printed Key Tags the secure way

3D‑printed key tags are ideal because they can be customized, color‑coded, and replaced easily.

  • Numbered tags only — Label each key with a number, not a name, address, or room description. This prevents anyone who gains access to the key box from immediately knowing what each key opens.

  • Consistent tagging system — Use a simple numbering scheme (e.g., 01–20) and keep the design / color identical for all tags to avoid revealing importance or hierarchy.

  • Durable materials — Print tags in PETG or ABS for long‑lasting durability, especially if keys are used frequently.

Here you'll find models for printable key tags that you can print on any printer (including multicolor printers).

Variants

You will find versions for

  • use of a single color printer (embossed without filament change)

  • use of a single color printer (raised with pause & manual filament change)

  • use of a multi material / multicolor printer (MMU, AMS, ACE, etc)

Print

  • Layer Height: 0.16mm

  • Perimeters / Walls: 4 walls

  • Top/Bottom Layers: 6 layers

  • Material: PLA for indoor use, PETG / ABS for higher durability

3. Creating and protecting a digital key list

A secure key system needs a master list — but it must be protected properly.

  • Digital key list — Create a document that maps each key number to its purpose (e.g., “Key 3 → Garden shed”).

  • Encrypted storage — Store the digital file in an encrypted folder, local encrypted NAS oder cloud service (Onedrive, etc) or password‑protected archive (zip, rar, 7zip). This prevents unauthorized access even if your device is compromised.

  • Printed emergency copy — Keep one printed copy in a sealed envelope with your important documents (e.g., insurance papers), ideally in another room from the key box. This ensures access during emergencies without exposing the information near the keys.

I provide a key list (PDF), making it easy for users to maintain a clean, consistent, and secure record.

4. How these elements work together to improve your security

  • 3D‑printed key tags prevent sensitive information from being displayed on the keys themselves.

  • A securely mounted key box keeps keys organized and out of sight.

  • A digitally encrypted key list ensures that only authorized people can understand the numbering system.

  • A printed backup ensures resilience during power outages or device failures.

Together, you will create a security system that is simple, affordable, and easy to maintain.
