I wanted to be able to use enterprise cast-off 15mm drives in my Raspberry Pi NAS, but the Radxa SATA Hat is only designed for 9mm or thinner drives. I saw NPD's Pi RAID design and it inspired me to design a (fairly similar) version that could take 15mm 2.5" drives.
Required components:
M3 x 4.6 x 5.7 heat set inserts (Amazon or Aliexpress)
30cm SATA Cable Extensions (Amazon, Aliexpress)
Power button (optional)
Power lead (optional)
You probably want both a 5v PWM 80mm and 5v PWM 40mm fan, a PWM cable splitter, and a PHD 2.0mm 2x5 cable for connecting to the Penta SATA hat to keep everything cool, but if your 10" rack is open it might cool well on its own.
You will need to insert 4 heat set threads into the back of the drive bay as well as the outer (right) wall of the drive bay. If you edit the SCAD file and re-render it you can just about manage to thread a traditional fan mounting screw backwards through the fan into the print, but since you already need to use some heat set inserts for the back of the drive bay anyway, go ahead and put them in for the 80mm fan too.
The back of the drive bay bridge also needs another 8 heat set inserts as well.
Once everything is loosely in place, put a drive into a drive tray and slide it into the drive bay. Attach a SATA cable extension to the back of the drive, loosely screw the right SATA cable bridge to the back of the drive bay, then firmly screw the SATA cable extension to the cable bridge. Remove and re-slot the drive, then tighten for that drive down, and try removing and re-inserting the drive to make sure it's smooth and doesn't feel like it's breaking the connector off the drive.
Repeat that for the other 3 drives.
I find it easier to attach the drive extensions to the SATA hat and then mount the Pi on the sled, but there's enough space there to get them on even with the Pi mounted.
