When we had our bathroom remodeled, the contractor refused to mount the corner shelves in the shower because they “didn’t have the right glue.”

That led me to try to solve a problem that has plagued DIYers forever: how to mount a heavy shelf to tile in a shower.

The shelf in question is this one from Home Depot:

I used this adhesive to mount the shelf:

To mount the shelf, I followed these steps:

1. Print the bracket.

2. Measure where the bracket will go for each shelf.

3. Adjust for the corner not being square by adding several layers of masking tape to the bracket.

4. Hot glue the bracket into place. (The included image shows my son holding the bracket because I forgot to take a photo before removing it, of course.)

5. Apply polyurethane construction adhesive to the shelf and press it into place. Nothing physically holds the shelf to the wall while the adhesive cures, it simply rests on the bracket. I didn’t love this aspect, but I couldn’t come up with a better solution, and it has held up well so far.

6. Wait for the adhesive to dry. This took about 6 hours per shelf for me.

7. Spray isopropyl alcohol on the hot glue joints to release the glue and remove the bracket.

8. Clean up any construction adhesive squeeze-out.

9. Seal around the shelf with silicone.

10. Repeat for the remaining shelves.

The grout lines in our tile are only about 1/8" (3 mm), but I positioned the shelf directly on the grout lines to give the adhesive a bit of added holding strength.
