This rotational hook aims to bring new functionality to otherwise often unused parts of our homes and workshops. As stairs typically have vertical posts and are often located near an entrance, I see an opportunity to improve the experience of entering the home. There are countless occasions where a few extra hooks would be real lifesavers- large numbers of party guests, heavy grocery bags, a backpack or purse, and wet umbrellas, to name a few. If you have ever had your hands full when getting home and wished for a quick and safe place to drop things off- this design is for you!
This modular design uses a single standardized metric bolt + nut to safely fasten the housing, while simultaneously providing a rotational axis for the hook to open and close. The undulating design around the central vertical hole allows the housing to open up just enough to get around the post, while still providing excellent strength and rigidity under tension.
It was designed parametrically, and thus enabled me to generate over 100 versions with an extensive range of inner diameters- in a community of designers/makers, a perfect fit is a must! Please note the following when locating and downloading the file which best fits your case:
Files and Hardware:
The files are organized in folders, according to the sizing groups below. Make sure to download one hook and one housing .stl file and be sure to get the matching hardware as it differs between the sizing groups. The size of the inner diameter (your vertical post) is in the title of each file, for example: the file “20220311_CVD_RotoHook_S-14p2_Housing.stl” is from the S group and has an inner diameter of 14.2 mm.
The “S” Group accommodates versions with an inner diameter of 10 mm - 20 mm and requires one M5 x 25 cylindrical socket head screw as well as an M5 hex nut.
The “M” Group offers an inner diameter of 20 mm - 30 mm and requires one M6 x 35 cylindrical socket head screw as well as an M6 hex nut.
The “L” Group does not yet exist, but if there is any interest, let me know, and I will expand the product family for larger sizes. :)
Printing:
All parts print great with the standard Prusa Slicer “0.20 mm QUALITY” profile settings and no supports! As these are mechanical parts, please do be sure to use at least 4 perimeters.
Nozzle: 0.4 mm
Layer Height: 0.2 mm
Supports: None
Perimeters: 4!
Infill: 20%

I had a lot of fun designing this part and tried to keep it minimal and versatile, so that it would fit in many other contexts.
