This compass rose is designed to fit a 3x2 inch compass base, with an alternate flat pad version available for larger compasses. To use, align the compass rose so that North on the rose matches the compass needle’s North, then place the compass flat on the ground. This setup helps young Scouts easily visualize cardinal directions and observe how the compass points North. We used this tool during a simple scavenger hunt with Wolf and Bear Scouts (2nd and 3rd graders), giving them basic directional instructions like “Go 10 steps West” or “Take 12 steps North” to find small caches. It served as an effective and engaging way to introduce early land navigation concepts in a hands-on, age-appropriate format.
