A handle adapter for a Micro-Mini scooter.
- Tired of bending over to help your new-to-scooting child as they go along sidewalks with you?
- Tired of your rider running out of energy half way through a walk?
- Tired of needing to intervene to navigate roots, edges, and hills?
This adapter is for you! I've used this adapter to get my son to school for 18 months and it's still going strong.
This adapter lets you use a standard piece of ¾" (trade size) PVC pipe to create a removable pushing handle that can be easily removed and carried when your rider has enough energy to scoot on their own or has reached a safe scooting area.
Note that this specifically fits the “Mini” Micro scooter, because it relies on being captured between the top handle and the telescoping clamp. This will not work for a fixed-height handle Micro scooter as there is no bottom shoulder to mount against.
Print Settings:
I suggest printing in PETG and setting perimeters to 5 to create a solid set of perimeter loops for maximum strength. I haven't found brim to be necessary, but if you have adhesion issues, it wouldn't hurt to add one.
This model can technically be sliced and scaled to be taller or shorter, but I've found this length has the best balance of strength without getting too tall for small riders.
PVC details:
The PVC pipe I use is a ¾" Schedule 40 pipe (OD is approximately 1.05"). I suggest a length of about 24", but you can cut it to whatever length makes sense for your height. Note that the taller the handle, the easier it can be to tip your rider over, so err on the shorter side, and when navigating large bumps, consider grabbing lower on the tube.
Installation:
You'll need to slide the scooter handle out of your scooter. This can be done by first unlocking the clamp, and then sliding it all the way up. When you get to the max travel, a pin will pop into a hole on the scooter body. If you push in that hole while continuing to pull, you can slide the handle up and away from the scooter. After you've removed the handle, simply slide the adapter over and put it back on and re-tighten the clamp.
The curved relief in the adapter should go under the handle “T” shape, and the receiver for the PVC goes towards the front. The PVC tube is prevented from sliding down further because it hits the shoulder of the clamp, so this adapter doesn't need a bottom.
Happy scooting, and I hope your back thanks you!
