My Smart Hydroponic Tower – Grow Fresh Greens Anywhere!
Hey everyone! I’m excited to share my hydroponic tower design—a compact, space-saving system that lets you grow tons of plants, no garden required! After lots of tweaking, I’ve perfected a setup that thrives with lettuce, herbs, and leafy greens, right in my apartment.
Want just the mesh pot?
I’ve uploaded it separately! Check out my Hydro Mesh Pot on printables for all your hydroponic projects.
What Makes This Tower Awesome?
I didn’t want a basic hydroponic system—I wanted one that’s smart and self-sufficient! Here’s what sets it apart:
- DFRobot Water Pump (6V-18V): Compact yet powerful, it circulates water and nutrients efficiently.
- All connectors in the model are for 8mm pvc tubes
- The drain pipe is 10mm pvc tube
- Automation 2040 W Board with Pico W (ESPHome): The brain of the operation.
- Bioledex GoLeaf 12V LED Lights: Perfect for plant growth . (Check LED Tower Tip)
- MeanWell 12V 60W Power Supply: Powers 5m of LEDs and the pump with ease.
- Smart Sensors:
- SparkFun VEML6030 light sensor
- TMP102 temperature sensor
- Grove water level sensor (Work but would not recommend) (ESPHome)
- DFRobot Gravity water sensor (Not tested but should work)
This system is efficient and intuitive—it dims the grow lights when sunlight’s available and alerts me if the water’s low. My plants thrive with minimal effort, and the tower fits anywhere (mine’s in my living room—guests love it!). Fresh greens are always just a snip away.
Try it out and let me know how it goes—lettuce and herbs are my go-tos, but experiment with whatever you like!
Super Efficient Water Design!
The tower’s water system is a standout feature. It uses two matching modules—a top piece with drainage holes and a base piece designed to align perfectly with them. Important: You’ll need to print both pieces to ensure the drainage holes match up, creating a closed-loop system that recycles water and nutrients with almost no waste. Plants get exactly what they need, and you save resources!
I designed it for standard 5cm "Gitternetztopf" (mesh pots), widely available and easy to pop in and out. They hold your growing medium while roots dip into the water flow—setup and maintenance couldn’t be simpler! For a perfect fit, try my custom Hydro Mesh Pot on MakerWorld.
LED Tower Tip!
For the LED tower, glue the sections together to keep it stable. The LEDs generate some heat, which might cause the structure to bend slightly. Adding a small metal strip (like a thin brace) helps reinforce it—when it cools, it returns to its original shape. This simple fix ensures durability!
ESPHome Setup
Smart home fans, this one’s for you:
- Customizable ESPHome Config: Tweak it to your liking.
- WiFi Setup: Look for “Hydro Fallback Hotspot” after restart (default password: hydro_tower).
It integrates seamlessly with Home Assistant for full control—super easy and fun to set up!
Assembly & Mounting
For the base, I used a custom wooden box:
- Width: 75.7 cm | Depth: 43.8 cm | Height: 53.4 cm
Helpful tools:
- Drill Positioning Tool (Aliexpress)
- Storage Box: OBI Allzweckbox Santos M (25L, Transparent)
These keep everything tidy and make assembly a snap. For materials, skip PLA—water and wear could degrade it. Go for PETG (water-resistant, easy to print, bacteria-resistant) or PA (nylon) (tough and long-lasting).
Updated Led Towers
Following a period of observation, we repositioned the LED towers to optimize the lighting angle.

Updated Top
I've designed a new alternative top piece for the tower, consisting of two parts that are glued together rather than screwed, creating a simpler appearance. Be sure to use food-safe glue for assembly.
