There are already plenty of great models out there for turning used cardboard spool cores into small containers. I’ve printed and made a few myself, and they’re super handy for storing small parts or general knickknacks. However, I found them a bit plain, so I decided to create a sci-fi/steampunk-inspired design to spice things up.
These models are specifically designed to fit Bambu and Elegoo cardboard spool cores. The parts are designed to friction fit snugly, so no glue or additional fasteners are needed. Keep in mind, Elegoo cores may require a little prep work before use since they often have leftover glue and paper shreds after removing the spool sides.
I’ve included options for either a flat bottom or a stackable bottom, depending on your preference. Niether options requires supports but it may help the stackable version (I got some sagging).
While this might not be the most efficient way to upcycle these cores, I think it’s a fun way to make them look less like plain cardboard spools. Add a touch of spray paint and some weathering, and you’ll have yourself an in-universe container to match your favorite sci-fi aesthetic.
Happy making!
