Initially I just wanted to design a quick and simple rack for three Raspberry Pi's, but then it escalated a little bit. Finally it looks quite nice and has a fan for active cooling which can be regulated in its speed (only before assembly) so that it doesn't run at full speed, which is not required.
I designed it to fit a RPi 5 with heatsink and the original Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ installed. So it has enough space to fit with an NVME SSD installed (it's tight, but works).
I used GPIO pins 4 (5V) and 6 (GND) of an RPi (without a HAT attached) to power the fan. To regulate the fan speed use a small Step-Up converter module in between. I set the output to 8V, but that may vary depending on the fan used.
To connect the three single slots I design a snap connector. At least this connectors should be printed in PETG because it has more flex. It probably doesn't work if they are printed in standard PLA. I printed all parts in “Prusament PETG Carbon Fiber”
NOTE:
Because it was first not designed to have active cooling, the design isn't perfect (I even didn't planed to release it). The top and base may doesn't fit without a small gap, but was good enough for me. I changed the design a bit afterwards that it should hopefully fit better now.
Additional parts needed:
- A standard 80x25mm fan (12V)
(I used an old one out of a PC case) - 4 x M4x30 mm screws
- A small Step-Up converter module
(to raise the voltage from 5V to around 8-10V for the fan)
For printing you may want to add a modifier to increase the amount of perimeters for the connectors of the top and base (to 4+ perimeters) to increase its strength (it's a press fit):
