I designed this model for laser cutting out of acrylic, but it should work well for 3D printing as well.  I painted the words while the protective sheet was still on the acrylic, wiped the paint off, and gave it a couple of minutes to dry before pulling the protective sheet off.

If I were 3D printing it I'd probably print it at 0.3 mm and put a color change in at 1.1 mm and 1.7 mm to make the text pop.
