Summary

This is a wearable shaman mask I made from a 3D Scan of a fox skull and some little-big tweaks of my own.

The mask was conceived as a part of my bones shaman costume. The lower jaw is "hinged" with the cranium in a way that when you open your mouth the mask opens its jaw with it creating an amazing and creepy snap sound.

The mask also can be used as a Halloween pumpkin!! (as seen in the photos).

Warning: Maybe you should upscale or downscale it in order to fit correctly. We don't have the same head size!
Another trick could be printing only the front part leaving the rear of the head naked (like I did). You can see in the pictures below that I did not use "Mask_up_3_back.stl" in the final assembly.

• Notes: It could be added a geometry coupling between the parts, but if you use the correct type of glue there should be no problem. I used Araldite and it worked like a charm.

Hooks and Strap Mechanism

Well.. the name doesn't say much.

I designed a strap mechanism in order to make the jaw a working one.

It merely consists on a elastic rubber strapped to both sides of the cranium that presses against the back of the cosplayer's head. The jaw is hooked in such a way that it remains joined to the cosplayer's jaw.

How I Designed This

I used a 3D Scan of a fox skull and a 3D model of a human head. Then I measured my head and scaled up the 3D model so it could fit on my head.

Next, and being that the skull was solid I performed boolean operators in order to empty the skull (Skull minus human head).

Finally, I refined the 3D model by adjusting the distance of the eyes, the lower jaw geometry and its position relative to the cranium. The last step was smoothing some teeth and thickening some other parts.

Shaman Cosplay

Here are some pictures of my complete shaman cosplay. I played my character in the Drachenfest, a Live Action Role Playing Game (LARP) in Germany.
