Descrição

snap.mdo - Modular Desk Organizer

snap.mdo is a minimalist, modular desk organizer (mdo) that can be assembled and expanded as desired using various modules. snap.mdo consists of two components: the Base and the Modules.

All modules are magnetically connected to the Base. Magnets are integrated into the bottom of the modules, while the Base has corresponding counterparts on its surface. The Base can be customized in shape and size by combining different Base sizes, which are also connected via magnets invisibly built into the Base.

Assembly

Tip:
Mark all magnets on either the north or south side with a permanent marker. This will help you keep track of the magnets’ orientation.

Info:
The holes for the magnets are designed for magnets measuring 6 x 3 mm. These should fit securely in the holes on their own. If not, you can use a strong adhesive to fix them in place.

Assembling the Base
snap.mdo - Modular Desk Organizer base
The Base has magnets on its surface that correspond to the ones in the modules. It is recommended to first equip the Base with magnets and then add the modules to avoid potential issues with magnet alignment.

Multiple Bases are also connected via magnets. To help with this, markings ("N" and "S") are provided on the underside of each Base to guide you in properly aligning the magnets.
Assembling the Modules

Depending on the module size, up to 16 magnets can be used per module. However, using four magnets per module is recommended. The option to use more magnets has been intentionally included to allow for stronger magnetic adhesion when needed.

If you followed the tip and started with the Base, you can now place the magnets on the Base where they will align with the module. Always start with the outer corners. This makes it easier to insert the magnets into the module and ensures proper magnet alignment.

FAQ
Why are the Bases connected with magnets?
The reason is to maintain the minimalist design. Any other connection method would require visible cutouts for the connectors, which would compromise the clean surface.
Why aren't the modules connected directly by magnets?
The simple reason is to allow free customization of your personal desk organizer and the positioning of the modules. Connecting the modules directly would limit flexibility and result in a poor user experience.
Can I design my own modules?
Yes, I have uploaded the blank modules (.step) here

Note on Model Creation - Design Transparency
snap.mdo was designed and developed entirely from scratch – all parts, dimensions, and connections were originally created and optimized by me. I was inspired by existing modular organizer concepts, as is common within the maker community, but I did not copy or reuse any existing models. Some modules may look similar to well-known designs, which is hard to avoid with functional objects, but the entire geometry and structure are the result of my own work.
