Dynamic Tumbling Toy: A Fun Way to Explore Physics

Get ready for a hands-on physics experience with this dynamic tumbling toy! This retro-inspired toy uses a bearing and a rotating case to demonstrate some really interesting physics concepts in action. Watch as the toy tumbles down a track, with the bearing moving back and forth inside the case, while the case itself spins and shifts around two pivots. It's like a mini roller coaster for physics!

What Makes This Toy Special?

This toy isn't just fun to watch; it's a real-world demonstration of important physics principles. It uses a multibody system, which means it’s made up of several parts (the case, the bearing, and the track) that all move together in a complex way. This motion is controlled by four important factors, which you can think of as the “coordinates” that tell you how everything is moving. They are:

  • The horizontal and vertical movements of the case (the big part of the toy) as it shifts along the track.
  • The amount the case is rotating as it tumbles.
  • How the bearing moves inside the case, rolling from one side to the other.

Together, these four variables help explain how the toy tumbles, rolls, and spins, making it a perfect tool for learning about motion, forces, and balance.

What Can You Learn with This Toy?

  • Inertia and Momentum: As the bearing rolls inside the case, it shows how objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by a force. The case itself keeps spinning as long as it’s tumbling, helping you see how momentum works in real time.
  • Center of Mass: The toy helps explain the idea of the center of mass (the point where the mass of an object can be thought of as concentrated). As the case tilts and rotates, you can observe how the center of mass shifts, which affects the balance and movement of the toy.
  • Rotational Motion and Forces: The spinning and shifting of the case demonstrate rotational motion—how objects rotate around a point. You'll also see how forces (like gravity and friction) affect the toy's movement as it rolls along the track.
  • Chaotic Systems: The motion of this toy is more complicated than it first appears, making it a great example of how many moving parts can interact with each other in unpredictable ways. This can introduce the idea of chaotic systems in physics, which is something you can make a career of studying!

How It Works

When you set the toy on the track, the bearing starts rolling inside the case, causing the case to shift and rotate. As the case moves along the track, the bearing rolls from one end to the other. This continuous back-and-forth motion makes the case spin around its pivots, showing how different forces work together to create complex, dynamic motion. You can experiment with different angles to see how it affects the motion of the tumbler. It's like watching physics come to life!

Why It's Great for Learning Physics

This toy gives a visual and interactive way to explore key physics concepts like motion, force, and equilibrium. It's easy to use and understand, making it perfect for students from middle school to undergraduate levels. You can use it to demonstrate what you learn in the classroom, or just play with it to see physics in action. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!

Making The Model

This model was designed to be very easily printed and assembled. The only part you will need is a standard 608 bearing. Print the parts, place the bearing in the case and use a small amount of glue to glue the parts together. Be careful not to get any glue on the bearing itself or it may prevent it from rolling back and forth smoothly. Simply snap the two rails together and add the eyes to the bearing to give the little guy some character as he makes his way down the track.

Diving Deeper

The drawings included above come from a research paper by Leine, Campen, and Glocker. This paper was the inspiration for this design and if you're interested in learning more about how the authors used the Newton-Euler approach to solve this system, you can find their original work in the Documentation section below.
