Pulley is a simple mechanical device in mechanical engineering, mainly used to change the direction and magnitude of applied force. Pulleys can be divided into fixed pulleys and movable pulleys. Below, I will analyze the working principles and characteristics of these two types of pulleys separately.
###Fixed Pulley
**Working principle:**
A fixed pulley is a wheel that is typically installed in a stationary position. The rope or chain wraps around this wheel, with one end connected to the load and the other end pulled by the operator. When the operator pulls the rope, the wheel rotates but its position remains unchanged.
**Characteristics:**
-Changing the direction of force: The operator can pull the rope downwards to lift the object, which is more convenient than lifting it directly upwards.
-The magnitude of the force remains constant: fixed pulleys do not provide mechanical advantages, which means that you must apply a force equal to the weight of the load to lift it.
-Ideally, the efficiency is 100% because there is no amplification of force, and all input forces are used to overcome the gravity of the load.

###Movable Pulley
**Working principle:**
A pulley is a wheel that can move with a load. One end of the rope is fixed at a stationary point, the other end is connected to the load through a pulley, and the middle part is pulled by the operator.
**Characteristics:**
-Not changing the direction of force: The operator needs to pull the rope upwards, but because the pulley and load move together, it actually lifts the load.
-Provide mechanical advantages: The movable pulley can reduce the required lifting force. For an ideal pulley, only half of the load force needs to be applied to lift it, as it distributes the force between two sections of the rope.
-The efficiency may be lower than 100% due to friction and other energy losses in practical applications.

###Combination use
The movable pulley and fixed pulley are often combined together to form a so-called pulley system. This combination can provide greater mechanical advantage while changing the direction of force, allowing heavier objects to be lifted with less force. The mechanical advantage of a pulley system depends on the number of movable pulleys in the system; Every time an additional pulley is added, theoretically the required force can be almost halved.
Please note that in practical applications, the actual mechanical advantage may be lower than the theoretical value due to factors such as friction and rope weight. In addition, safety factors need to be considered when using pulleys to ensure that the equipment is installed correctly and regularly maintained and inspected.
