Introducing my newest and most ambitious design: the modular vertical plant system.

Inspiration

I live in a tiny apartment, but my love for indoor plants has led me to cultivate quite a large collection. Managing to fit all my plants within such a limited space has always been a challenge. This inspired me to design a system that allows plants to be stacked vertically, transforming my small space into one with almost limitless potential. The concept is similar to vertical hydroponic farming, but I’ve adapted it to showcase ornamental houseplants in a stylish and practical way.

Design

The design is sleek, modern, and doubles as a statement piece for any interior. It features four modular pot options, accommodating between 1 and 4 plants each. The base plate serves as a drainage tray, ensuring efficient water flow through the entire system when watered from the top. To maintain a clean and cohesive look, a lid conceals the locking mechanism on the top section. This innovative system not only maximizes space but also elevates the aesthetic of plant displays.

Print information

The entire model has been carefully designed to print without support or any steep overhangs.
I recommend printing the design with a matte filament for the cleanest look. I have not tested the design with any filament other than PLA.

Planting information

I recommend using small tropical plants to fill the planter, large plants may cause the system to fall over. The system is perfect for small cuttings or hanging plants. I would avoid using succulents unless you have a space with a large amount of direct sun and good air flow. Ventilation holes have been incorporated into the design to improve air flow as much as possible. Be careful when watering, as the base plate may easily overflow when too much water is added. I recommend using a very loose and airy soil mix, to ensure healthier plants.

Warnings

  • This is a very large print, using the entire build plate per section. Each module uses around 300g of filament. I've included a smaller version for if you still like the design but don't want to commit to such a large print.
  • When locking together each piece. Twist until you hear the click. This can take some force. The locking mechanism can wear out over time.
  • Depending on the quality of the filament used, and the outcome of the printing. The design may not be fully watertight. Be careful when placing on wooden furniture until you know there is no leakage.
