马自达转子发动机属于无活塞回旋式四行程内燃机的其中一种。自1961年2月27日日本东洋工业（现称马自达汽车公司）向德国NSU车厂（今奥迪汽车〔Audi〕的前身之一）和菲力斯·汪克尔签约取得汪克尔发动机的授权许可以来，即不断投入人力心血改良开发，并以rotary engine（原文写作“ロータリーエンジン”，转子发动机之意，但常略称为“RE”）称呼之。
