PLEASE READ: This is a modular system of inserts for the Root board game, as such, this listing contains a variety of models which aim to support different use cases. There is no standard set of models you should print. I recommend browsing the STLs for which ones suit your own needs hence why I haven't included any sliced models or prepared plates. All printed parts shown in pictures are available.

The System
This Root Board Game System (RBGS) has been a long time in the making. The initial idea came from a desire to have a modular set of inserts for the various expansions and optional extras for one of my favourite games. I had a feeling more expansions would eventually arrive and also knew that not everyone would be inclined to collect every single Root related product. The expandable nature of having well defined module sizes would mean that everyone could pick and choose which parts were relevant to them and expand their collection in future without having to start again with a new storage solution.

What's Included Here?
This collection includes the inserts for setup and miscellaneous models not associated with one of Root's particular factions. I chose to separate faction specific inserts to facilitate better versioning and remixing visibility. Most will want to print the setup module and some kind of deck storage, of which I will be expanding in future as the first designs I have created accommodate sleeved cards (which I personally use in my copy). However, I know many will prefer cards without sleeves and this will reduce the space needed to store the many cards found in the game. For now I shall put accessories here, the first being the card stand. Three of these card stands make a half module (see “How it works”) and optionally use 6x3mm magnets to snap togther. The included boxes can be used as templates for custom modules or as plain storage.

How It Works

A standard module in RBGS measures 69x106.5x32mm. The base game box has enough room to fit 16 modules, 2 layers of 2x4 (and a rule book). The boxes included here come in many different varieties other than the standard box which is the size of a single module. Other sizes include a half height module (short), a one and a half height module (tall), and wide versions of short/standard/tall. The tall modules, I have rarely used.
The main expansion boxes are the same horizontal size of the main Root box but have a vertical height that only accommodates one and a half modules. There is also just enough room in these boxes to hold the map boards and all the non-mechanical player boards (not including the upcoming Homeland expansion, adding more maps and player boards). Many accessories and trays to hold small parts can also fit in a half module space.

The only original component which does not fit into a regular or wide module is the wooden card stand that comes with the Riverfolk Company. This can still fit in the box if you are willing to reduce the number of modules in the box and/or rotating modules to create space.

The entire base game can fit, player boards and map board included, into the original box using this system with room for future expansion.

What's Next?

I will definitely be designing more RBGS content in future with new expansions on the way. But if people do find this system of use, I expect a few remixes and designs based on the modules may appear at some point. I'm always open to ideas, especially when it's multi-use or adaptable but likely won't have the time to follow many requests or create modules for every person's unique setup and preference. Hopefully, the ecosystem as you find it will get you most of the way there and you'll be able to tweak or create those few missing parts you need. If you do make any compatible models feel free to tag with RBGS.
