Stackable Moss Pole v 1.4.4 by MochPoch
New Bamboo moss pole system has been released. Click here 🌱

This project came about after a search for a moss pole that has:
- moisture retention
- stackability
- sturdiness
- reusability
The design is in parts as I hope to reuse them once it's time to chop and extend. A removable grid allows for untangling the roots when the plant is divided into single/multi-node cuttings.

This was intentionally modeled to fit the Lechuza Cube 14 which is home to most of my climbing plants. However, it will fit pots that are at least 13cm in diameter.

Do you have plants with a finer root system? Try the Petit (70mm) version.
The stackable moss pole is made of the following components:
- Backing
- Grid
- Base / Leg
- Cap with Wick Holder / Drip watering topper **
- Stake Clip **
** Decided to separate the optional accessories of the climbing support system so that the original listing is not cluttered.
Some notes:
- As climbing plants become top-heavy over time, it would be best to position the pole as close to the bottom of the pot as possible for stability.
- The optional cap serves as a wick holder. It can be skipped if a wick won't be used.
- The optional drip watering topper serves as it's top-down watering system. It can be skipped if you are using the wick option or you have a different watering method.
The following steps are suggested in order to prevent roots from attaching to the layer gaps and prevent water from leaking out of parts like the sealed base. As with any other closed-back growing poles, the roots tend to attach to the backing for support.
The option you choose depends on the material you printed with:
- Applying a coat or sealant, or
- Sanding the inner portion of the component
| Parameter | PLA | PETG |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle diameter | 0.4 mm | 0.4 mm |
| Layer Height | 0.2mm | 0.2mm |
| Print Speed | Printer-default (slow* is recommended) | 50% (slow) * |
* bed adhesion is crucial for the success of this print. The brim setting on some parts help with this. Slow speed can be set after the print (for some printers) has started, instead of fiddling with the print speed for the different layer components.
Backing
- Print top-side-down without supports, where the insert flap is at the top. (For reinforced strength on the flap, print at a 45° angle.)
- Outer Brim set to 20 mm width. (Brim-object gap may be set to 0.13 to avoid the need to deburr but it might affect the bed adhesion negatively)
Grid
Print flat on the bed without brim and support. (Applies for both basic and LECA grids of v1.1.0)
Base / Leg
Although I provided a base, I personally prefer to use the grid + backing combo in the potting medium itself as it mimics the way one would use wire/plastic-backed moss poles.
- Print top-side-down without supports. (For reinforced strength, print at a 45° angle.)
- Outer Brim set to 20 mm width. (Brim-object gap may be set to 0.13 to avoid the need to deburr but it might affect the bed adhesion negatively)
Additional Base Options
Added through v 1.2.0
- base_sealed should be printed with the same settings as the original Base/Leg
- base_open_round_end and base_sealed_round_end does not need a brim
Thanks for using the moss pole! Your inputs have greatly helped in shaping the features of the my new design, Bamboo Moss Pole (90mm), and it has been fun maintaining this project. I hope you support the next system but if you still have suggestions or requests for this model, please send me a message.
| Version | Change Log |
|---|---|
| 1.4.4 | Added insert (catch-base-135mm) for open and sealed round bases. This prevents the pole medium from falling into the base/pot. |
| 1.4.3 | Replaced 100mm grids with proper width and thicker depth. |
| 1.4.2 | Added link to the smaller Petit (70mm) version. |
| 1.4.1 | Added link to the Stake Clip |
| 1.4.0 | Separated optional watering attachments to keep description clear. These can now be found here: Moss Pole (Watering Attachments) |
