How to Play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is a strategic version of the classic game. Instead of playing one simple match, you are playing nine mini-games at the same time to win a giant mega-board.

The Goal

Win three mini-boards in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) on the large board.

The Setup

• The main board is broken up into nine large squares.
• Each of those large squares contains its own small 3x3 tic-tac-toe grid.
• Player One takes the white pieces.
• Player Two takes the red pieces.

The Core Rule (The Twist)

1. The Opening Move: Player One places a small token in any square on any of the nine grids.
2. Sending Your Opponent: The square you choose inside a small grid forces your opponent to play in that same relative section on the large board.
   • Example: If you place your piece in the top-right corner of a small grid, your opponent is forced to make their next move somewhere inside the top-right mini-board.
3. The Chain Reaction: Player Two then plays a piece in that designated mini-board. Whichever square they pick determines where Player One has to go next, and so on.

Winning a Section

• When you get three small pieces in a row inside one grid, you win that specific board.
• Once a grid is won, clear it or flip it, and place one of the large X or O markers over the entire section to permanently claim it.

What if a Grid is Full or Already Won?

• If a player's move sends you to a mini-board that has already been won and covered by a large marker, you get a free move. You can place your piece in any open slot on any other grid.
• The same free move rule applies if you are sent to a grid that is completely full and tied.

Winning the Game

The game ends the moment a player captures three mini-boards in a row to complete a 3-in-a-row line across the main mega-grid.
