Ratchet Scroll Frame – Embroidery Frame with Directional Lock
An innovative embroidery scroll frame featuring a mechanical system for effortless canvas tensioning and scrolling.
By utilizing rotating aluminum profiles where the canvas is attached, combined with a directional locking mechanism, tightening and advancing your fabric is easier than ever. The rotation direction is fully adjustable, allowing you to scroll seamlessly in both directions.
How it Works
The direction of rotation is controlled by small switches located on each end of the side pieces. Each switch has 3 positions:
- Center position: Rotation is locked in both directions.
- Side positions (Left / Right): The switch points to an arrow indicating the allowed direction of rotation.
💡 Pro Tip: Once your canvas is properly tensioned, always return the switch to the center position. When you are not actively scrolling, keep the switches centered to prevent premature wear on the locking mechanism.
Bill of Materials (BOM)
| Item | Specification | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum Profile | 20x20 mm (500 mm length used in proto) | 2 pcs | Must be tapped on both ends for M5 screws. |
| M5 Screws | Length depends on the depth of the profile thread | 4 pcs | For mounting the aluminum profiles. |
| Self Tapping Screw | BT2.6x8 SHCS | 12 pcs | Standard screws from the Bambu Lab store. |
⚠️ Important Note on Aluminum Profiles
The aluminum profiles must be tapped on both ends to accept M5 screws. Many sellers offer this as a custom cutting service, so keep this in mind when ordering. If you plan to tap the threads yourself, proceed with caution: breaking a tap inside the profile is easy to do and will ruin the part.
Profile Specifications Used in this Project:
- Height / Width: 20 mm x 20 mm (Actual size: 19.7 x 19.7 mm — see note below)
- Length: 500 mm (50 cm)
- Slot Width: 5.15 mm
📏 Aluminum Profile Tolerance Note: Aluminum profiles don't always have perfect dimensions. In my case, the actual measured size of the profiles was 19.7 x 19.7 mm. The entire project was designed around these exact measurements. If your profiles are larger and don't fit, please let me know! I will make the necessary adjustments to the design and publish an updated version for larger profiles.
3D Printing & Assembly Guidelines
- Spring Element (Colored RED in the photos): CRITICAL – This part must be printed in PETG to maintain its flexibility and spring tension over time.
- Canvas Clips: These clips should also be printed in PETG for durability and flexibility.
- Remaining Parts: Can be safely printed in standard PLA.
⚠️ Test Your Clips First!
The clips that lock the canvas onto the profiles are designed to be quite tight. Before printing the entire set, please print just one clip as a test and check the fit together with your canvas.
- I have already included a looser version in the print profile.
- If it is still too tight for your specific canvas/profile setup, let me know and I will upload an even looser version.
