OpenSCAD Parametric Soccer Ball
Create your own customizable soccer ball with this parametric OpenSCAD model! The design is generated entirely from code and includes an easy-to-use parameter panel so you can customize the ball to your needs. The ball is hollow to save material and print time, and the shell thickness is fully adjustable.
Whether you print it as a desk toy, decorative piece, ornament, or miniature soccer ball, this project is a fun demonstration of the power of parametric modeling in OpenSCAD. Adjust a few settings, regenerate the model, and create a soccer ball that is uniquely yours.
Creative Ideas & Use Cases
- Tabletop Penny Football / Soccer Matches: Scale the ball down to 15mm–20mm, set the flat_panel to none for maximum roll, and print a handful of them for an intense finger-flick tabletop tournament!
- Trophy & Award Toppers: Printing a trophy for a local youth league or coach? Scale the ball up, print it in a silk gold, silver, or bronze filament, and glue it to a 3D-printed pedestal base.
- Birthday Cake & Cupcake Toppers: Scale the ball to around 30mm–40mm. Print it using food-safe PETG (or wrap the base in food-safe wrap) to make the ultimate decoration for a sports-themed birthday party.
- Custom Keychains & Backpack Charms: Shrink the ball down to 25mm. Use your slicer to add a small negative cylinder or ring to the top panel before slicing, and slide a keychain ring right through it.
- Pet Toys (Cat & Small Dog Balls): Crank up the shell_thickness for durability, print it in a flexible filament like TPU, and drop a couple of small metal bells inside mid-print to make an interactive, bouncy pet toy.
Recommended Print Settings
To get the absolute best quality out of the ball's curved overhangs and sharp panel details as seen in the image, we recommend using the following settings:
- Layer Height: 0.08mm to 0.12mm (finer layers keep the spherical top surface incredibly smooth) or Adaptive Layers.
- Supports: Highly Recommended. Unless you are utilizing a flattened panel setting, standard or tree supports are needed to cradle the bottom curved overhangs of the ball. Also, supports in the inside can help keep the top form intact.
- Brim: No Brim. A brim is not required, as long as you use the pentagon or hexagon flattening print settings to create a stable first-layer footprint on your build plate.
- Infill: 10% to 15% grid or gyroid. Because the model is natively designed as a hollow shell with an adjustable wall thickness, it saves material and print time while remaining structurally strong.
Multi-Color Printing Notice
If you are using a multi-material system (like Bambu AMS), the file is fully pre-segmented for color division. Simply slice the model, assign Black to the pentagons, White to the body, and enjoy an authentic, seamless classic soccer ball straight off the build plate!
