A broken village well stands in the center of a raided settlement, its stones cracked, ropes frayed, and bucket smashed beside it. Ash, claw marks, and scattered coins hint at a violent attack. But this well is no ruin—it is a mimic lying in wait, its stone “bricks” flexing like muscle and its dark opening hiding a wet, tooth-lined maw. When prey gets close, the rope snaps forward like a tongue and the well’s stones split open into jagged jaws. 🧱👅

Your party is visiting a raided village. The village has been raided by a group of goblins/bugbears, and your party needs to check for survivers. In the middle of the village there is a broken well. Add different encounters, loots etc if the party checks the other houses

Recommended: 

Let the party investigate one of the houses, make them roll investigation check and locate a hinge under the carpet. Strength check to open it. And a perception check to locate a survivor in the cellar.

👀 Recognizing the Mimic

The partyleader or the first ranger needs a check before the mimic reveals itself:

Perception DC 14

On close inspection, the “cracks” in the stone look too organic, almost like veins or wrinkles. The bucket rope is damp and slightly sticky. 🧪

Survival DC 13

The party notices drag marks leading toward the well, but no tracks leading away. Something has been pulling victims in. 🩸

Arcana DC 16

If no checks succeed, the mimic may make an attack with advantage or trigger combat immediately. ⚔️

🐙 Combat Twist

When revealed, the well mimic can:

• Grapple a creature with its tongue. 👅
• Bite anyone leaning over the edge. 🦷
• Pull a target “inside the well,” restraining them in its maw. 🕳️
• Spit out bones, coins, or ruined gear as difficult terrain. ☠️
