What is a Rope Tornado?

A rope tornado is a narrow, highly contorted tornado that resembles a long, snake-like rope stretching from the storm cloud to the ground.

Key Characteristics

• Dissipating stage: It represents the final phase of a tornado's life cycle.
• Shrinking core: The funnel narrows as the rear-flank downdraft cuts off the warm inflow.
• Extreme contortion: Wind shear twists and stretches the funnel into bizarre, loop-like shapes.
• Deceptive power: Despite looking small and weak, it can still pack violent, destructive winds.
• Narrow path: The damage track is usually very thin but highly concentrated.
