Parametric Deck Box — Fits Any Card Game
A fully customizable deck box for board gamers with cards of any shape or size. Type in your card's width, height, and deck thickness — the model regenerates around your exact dimensions. Works for sleeved
cards, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Dixit, tarot, Exploding Kittens, and anything else with rectangular cards.
Features
- True parametric design — drives the entire box from three card measurements (width, height, deck thickness) plus a tolerance value, so cards always fit just right
- Lift-off cap with friction fit — two-piece shoulder design (like Exploding Kittens). The lid presses straight down over the tray's shoulder along ~22 mm of continuous contact, so it grips without
latches, magnets, or sliding rails
- Subtle thumb pulls — small semicircular cutouts at the seam on the long sides let you lift the lid off with both thumbs in one smooth motion
- Flush exterior — when assembled, lid and tray meet seamlessly with no visible step
- Rounded or square corners — your choice via the customizer, with auto-capped corner radius
- Print-ready out of the box — both pieces lay flat on the build plate with no supports needed. Tray prints floor-down, lid prints cap-down
- Adjustable friction — a single lid_fit_clearance parameter dials in the grip for your specific printer (loosen for an oversized-printing machine, tighten for one that prints undersized)
Customizer Parameters
- Card Dimensions — card_width, card_height, deck_thickness: your cards, in mm
- Fit & Tolerances — card_tolerance, lid_fit_clearance: card slack and friction grip
- Walls — wall_thickness, shoulder_offset: material thickness and shoulder step depth
- Lid — lid_height: how much of the box is "lid" vs "tray"
- Appearance — corner_style, corner_radius: square or rounded outer corners
- Thumb Pulls — thumb_cut_width, thumb_cut_depth: size of the pull cutouts (width = 2 × depth gives a clean semicircle)
- Output — part: render box + lid together, or just one
All parameters have safety clamps — extreme values are auto-capped so the model stays printable.
Print Settings
- Material: PLA, PETG, or PLA+ — all work great. PETG gives slightly more flex for the friction fit
- Layer height: 0.2 mm (or 0.16 for a smoother lid finish)
- Infill: 15–20% is plenty
- Supports: none
- Orientation: as exported — both pieces sit flat on the bed
If the lid fits too loosely on the first print, drop lid_fit_clearance by 0.05 mm. If it's too tight, raise it by 0.05 mm. Most calibrated FDM printers will hit the default 0.15 mm clearance right on.
Notes
The geometry is fully manifold (verified with CGAL) and renders in under a second in OpenSCAD, so the MakerWorld Customizer should regenerate it quickly for any parameter combination.
Credits
The OpenSCAD source was developed with Claude (Anthropic's AI assistant) as a design and coding collaborator — concept refinement, geometry, non-manifold safety checks, and parameter validation were all worked out together.
Enjoy, and happy gaming!
