The Gridfinity system has become the gold standard for workshop, desk, and drawer organization. Like many of you, I have printed dozens of standard bins. However, fixed models quickly reveal their limitations when you need a highly specific layout. So, I made myself a script to generate bins that specifically meet my needs. Recently, I needed some simple space dividers for my camper trailer, so I incorporated that concept into my bin generator.

This OpenSCAD script was built from scratch to give you a lot of freedom to design your bin, space divider, or custom adapters.

 

What is parametric in this model?

  • Grid Base Mode: Toggle between the classic 42mm Gridfinity footprint and a half-grid configuration (21mm), perfect for micro-organization or maximizing storage in tight spaces.

     

  • Grid Size: Choose exactly how many grid units wide and long your bin will be. The script automatically scales the calculations based on your selected base mode (21mm or 42mm increments).

     

  • Asymmetrical Cantilever Extensions (Floor Extension): Extend the floor outward independently on the Front, Back, Left, or Right sides. This allows the bin body to overlap outside the standard grid footprint to fill gaps. This approach allows for an ultra-precise fit and guarantees a perfectly flat, even base across the entire surface, although it does require using supports during 3D printing.

     

  • Continuous Extended Walls & Dividers: If a cantilever extension is present, both the active outer walls and the internal dividers automatically continue over the overhang section, seamlessly maximizing and extending the usable volume.

     

  • Wall Height: Define the total height of the bin in millimeters (including the foot) to fit shallow drawers or deep toolboxes.

     

  • Independent Thicknesses (Wall & Floor): Set the outer wall thickness independently from the floor plate. Keep a solid chassis with a thin floor to save filament and printing time.

     

  • Removable Walls: Toggle individual visibility for the Front, Back, Left, and Right walls. This allows you to create open-front organizer bins or seamlessly fuse adjacent units together.

     

  • Custom Internal Dividers: Divide the bin into a custom grid of smaller compartments to organize small parts, screws, or specific tools.

     

  • Divider Thickness: Adjust how thick the internal compartment walls are to balance structural strength and maximum internal storage space.

     

  • Divider Height: Choose the exact height of your internal dividers. Make them full-height to completely isolate parts, or shorter than the main bin walls for easier access to your items.

     

  • Divider Position Offsets: Shift your entire divider layout along the X or Y axis to create asymmetrical compartments tailored to uniquely shaped items.

     

  • Bottom Fillets: Enable and adjust smooth rounded transitions where the walls meet the floor, making it easy to scoop out tiny parts like washers or pins.

     

  • Magnet Sockets (with_magnets): Toggle 6mm magnet mounting holes under the base feet. Includes dedicated nominal size and tolerance settings to perfectly match your 3D printer's accuracy. (Automatically managed and disabled in half-base mode to prevent geometry corruption).

     

  • Adjustable Release Notches: Enable leverage holes next to the magnets to safely pry them out later. You can customize the notch diameter to fit your favorite tool (e.g., a paperclip, hex key, or precision screwdriver).

     

Smart Adaptive Corners & Extensions

The outer walls (Front, Back, Left, Right) can be toggled on or off individually. The script features an adaptive boundary logic:

  • Standard Mode: When all walls are active on a standard footprint, you get the classic rounded Gridfinity corners.

     

  • Fusing Blocks: The moment you disable a wall to fuse multiple blocks together, the script automatically transforms those junctions into sharp 90-degree square corners, ensuring a perfectly flush, continuous fit between fused blocks without any awkward gaps or weak points.

     

  • Overhang Profiles: When front/back or lateral cantilever extensions are applied, the outer corner radii and internal base fillets dynamically reposition themselves to the new extended perimeter, maintaining uniform wall thickness and smooth sweeping internal corners even on highly customized, asymmetric shapes.
