Modelo 3D W.E.T. – Wind-Energy Turbine & Archimedes Fountain por Functional models no MakerWorld

Descrição

Why settle for a wind spinner that just sits there? Meet the W.E.T. (Wind-Energy Turbine). This is a 100% 3D-printable, functional hydraulic machine that turns a light breeze into a waterfall.

Using a high-torque turbine to drive a precision Archimedes screw, this model lifts water from the base reservoir and cycles it back down in a continuous loop. No batteries, no motors, and zero extra hardware required.

The Legend of Archimedes (The OG Maker)

This design is a modern tribute to the Archimedes Screw. While similar devices may have existed, Archimedes of Syracuse popularized and perfected the design in the 3rd century BC.

Archimedes wasn't just a mathematician; he was the ultimate mechanical engineer of antiquity. He famously designed the screw to pump bilge water out of the Syracusia—the largest ship ever built at the time—and created massive cranes like the "Claw of Archimedes" to literally lift Roman warships out of the sea and smash them.

Fun Fact: Archimedes’ engineering was so advanced that his machines kept the Roman fleet "astonished" and at bay for three years during the Siege of Syracuse. Legend has it he was so focused on his calculations that when the city finally fell, his last words to the Roman soldier who killed him were, "Do not disturb my circles."

Key Features

  • 💎 100% 3D Printable: No bearings, screws, or metal axles.
  • 🛠️ 10s Assembly: Snap-fit design. No glue, no tools, no frustration.
  • 📉 Minimal Supports: Optimized for easy printing with supports required only at the base of the screw. (included in file)
  • ♻️ Renewable Energy: Powered entirely by the wind.
  • 🌊 Functional Art: Perfect for gardens, balconies, or as a physics demonstrator.

How it Works

The top turbine is engineered for high startup torque. This rotation is transferred directly to the internal Archimedes screw. As the screw turns, it captures water in its "curves" and carries it up the central column, creating a continuous flow as long as the wind blows.

Print Settings

  • Primary Material: PETG is recommended for long-term outdoor use. You can print this in PLA, but it is not intended for long-term weather exposure.
  • Supports: Required ONLY on the base of the Archimedes screw.
  • Walls: 3-4 Walls (Critical to ensure the screw and reservoir are solid).
  • Infill: 15% (Gyroid recommended).
  • Layer Height: 0.2mm.

Assembly Instructions (The 10-Second Snap)

  1. Screw the Archimedes screw into the center of the Main Pillar.
  2. Screw the Turbine Blade onto the hexagonal drive at the top.
  3. Place the pillar into the Base Reservoir.
  4. Fill with water and watch physics in action!

💡 Tips for Success & Troubleshooting

  • Low Wind Performance: Butter it! If the turbine isn't spinning in light breezes, check the contact points. A tiny drop of lubricant on the shaft will drastically reduce friction and get it spinning in the slightest puff of air.
  • Scaling: This model is precision-engineered for 3D printed tolerances. I do not recommend scaling down below 100%, as the snap-fit parts and internal clearances may become too tight to function.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does it really need no bearings? A: Correct! The friction is minimized by the vertical orientation and the surface area of the printed plastic. It’s designed to be a "grab-and-go" print that doesn't require a trip to the hardware store.

Q: Can I use this indoors? A: Absolutely! If you don't have wind, you can even use a small desk fan to power the turbine and enjoy the sound of flowing water at your desk.
