2. How to Mitigate the Flaws Stringing occurs when excess, semi-liquid filament oozes from the nozzle during non-extrusion travel movements across open spaces. If this print looks like a spiderweb, here is the hard data on how to fix it:
- Tune Retraction Settings: The primary defense against stringing is pulling the filament back before a travel move to relieve nozzle pressure. Adjust your retraction distance and speed in small increments; finding the exact mechanical balance prevents the pressure build-up that causes oozing.
- Drop the Nozzle Temperature: If your hotend is too hot, the thermoplastic becomes excessively fluid and will drip regardless of your retraction settings. Lowering the printing temperature makes the plastic more viscous and less prone to uncontrolled flow.
- Increase Travel Speed: The faster the printhead moves between extrusion points, the less time the melted filament has to ooze out and stick to the print.
